In most restaurant POS setups, the drawer depends on a command from the POS software, a compatible receipt printer port, the correct kick cable, and a working release mechanism.

Start by confirming where the failure occurs. Does the drawer open with its key? Does it open from the receipt printer’s test function? Did the issue begin after replacing a printer, changing POS settings, moving a terminal, or installing a new cable? Those details narrow the problem quickly and help avoid replacing working equipment.

Why Is My Cash Drawer Not Opening From the POS?

Most standard cash drawers are printer-driven. The POS sends an open-drawer command to the receipt printer, then the printer sends a short electrical pulse through its cash drawer port. If any part of that sequence is missing or incompatible, the drawer remains closed.

A receipt can still print even when the drawer does not open. Printing confirms that the POS can communicate with the printer, but it does not prove that the POS is sending the correct drawer-open command or that the printer’s drawer port is functioning. Treat printing and drawer release as related but separate functions.

First, verify that the POS has the correct receipt printer selected. A software update, terminal replacement, network printer change, or new user profile can point the POS to a different printer than the one physically connected to the drawer. Check the POS hardware settings for the designated cash drawer or receipt printer and confirm that the open command is enabled for cash transactions.

Some systems provide controls such as “open drawer after cash sale,” “open drawer after receipt,” or a manual “no sale” option. If a manager setting disables no-sale access or limits drawer opening to cash tenders, the drawer may appear faulty when it is following the configured rule. Test with an approved cash transaction, then test the POS manual drawer-open function if authorized for your operation.

Check the Drawer Cable Before Replacing Hardware

The cable between the cash drawer and receipt printer is a frequent failure point. It often looks similar to a telephone cable because it uses an RJ-style connector, but it is not automatically interchangeable with a telephone cord. Cash drawers and printers can use different pinouts, connector types, and voltage requirements.

Inspect both ends of the cable. The connector should seat firmly in the printer’s port marked for the cash drawer, commonly labeled “DK,” “Drawer,” or shown with a drawer icon. Do not connect it to an Ethernet, network, or phone port. A loose latch, bent contact, pinched cable, or cable pulled tight behind a counter can interrupt the release signal.

If a spare compatible drawer cable is available, test it. This is usually faster and less expensive than replacing a printer or drawer. Use a cable specified for the printer and drawer models in your installation. A cable that fits physically can still be electrically incorrect.

Also check whether the installation uses a printer-driven drawer or a USB, serial, or powered interface drawer. A direct-connect drawer needs the correct driver, port assignment, and power arrangement. It will not respond to a printer kick command unless the POS setup supports that specific hardware configuration.

Verify Printer Drawer-Port Compatibility

Not all receipt printer drawer ports provide the same release voltage. Many commercial drawers are designed for either 12V or 24V operation, and a mismatch can cause inconsistent opening, a weak release, or no release at all. The printer documentation and drawer label should identify the required interface specification.

This matters when a restaurant replaces an older receipt printer with a different model. The new printer may print receipts normally but may not match the drawer’s voltage or pinout. Before ordering a replacement, confirm the printer model, drawer model, connector type, and required release voltage. Compatibility is more useful than buying based on connector appearance alone.

Test the Mechanical Side of the Cash Drawer

Use the supplied key to test the drawer manually. Most cash drawers have a lock position for normal electronic operation and another position that allows manual opening. If the drawer opens smoothly with the key, the slide mechanism is probably not completely jammed, and the problem is more likely in the signal path, solenoid, cable, or configuration.

If it will not open with the key, inspect the drawer mechanically. Overfilled bill compartments, curled currency, loose coins, receipt paper, broken till inserts, and debris in the slide tracks can stop the drawer from releasing. Remove the till insert if possible and check for anything caught near the latch or rails.

A drawer that opens only partway may have a mechanical obstruction or worn slides. A drawer that makes a click or hum but stays closed often has power reaching the solenoid, while the latch is binding or the solenoid is weak. That distinction is useful for a technician: no sound points toward the POS, printer, cable, or electrical connection; a release sound with no opening points toward the drawer mechanism.

Do not force a stuck drawer open with tools while it is connected to active equipment. Damage to the latch, till, printer port, or cable can turn a simple repair into a full hardware replacement. Follow your cash-control procedure and use the drawer key or approved service access method.

Check Power, Connections, and Recent Changes

A printer-driven drawer normally receives its release pulse through the receipt printer, so the printer must be powered on and fully initialized. Check the printer’s power supply, outlet, power strip, and status lights. A printer may appear partially functional after a power interruption but fail to activate peripheral ports correctly.

For USB or powered cash drawers, confirm that the power adapter is connected, rated correctly, and securely seated. A failing power supply can create intermittent behavior, especially during busy periods when printers, terminals, and network equipment share counter power. If possible, test the drawer at a known-good outlet with the manufacturer-specified adapter.

Recent changes deserve special attention. A drawer problem that began immediately after a counter move or equipment swap is often caused by a disconnected cable, an incorrect port, a changed printer selection, or a replacement device with different electrical requirements. Check the physical path from POS terminal to printer to drawer before making software changes.

Networked POS environments add another consideration. If the POS is configured to print to a remote kitchen or office printer instead of the front-counter receipt printer, the drawer command may be sent to the wrong device. The correct receipt printer must be assigned to the register that controls that drawer.

A Practical Troubleshooting Order

Work from the simplest checks to the components most likely to require replacement. Confirm that the receipt printer is powered on and online, then perform an authorized cash-sale or manual open test in the POS. Verify the POS is assigned to the correct front-counter printer. Next, inspect and reseat the drawer cable at both ends, checking that it is connected to the dedicated drawer port.

After that, test the drawer with its key and inspect the till, latch area, and rails for obstructions. If the drawer opens manually but not electronically, substitute a known-compatible cable when available. If the cable tests good, compare the printer drawer-port specification with the drawer’s required voltage and pinout.

This sequence limits downtime because it separates configuration, cabling, printer, and mechanical issues without guessing. It also gives an installer or hardware supplier useful information if a replacement cable, printer, interface drawer, or complete cash drawer is needed.

When Replacement Is the Right Call

Replace the cash drawer when the lock, latch, solenoid, or slide assembly is worn, damaged, or unreliable after basic cleaning and compatibility checks. In a high-volume quick-service location, intermittent opening is not a minor inconvenience. It slows tendering, disrupts shift controls, and can lead staff to use unsafe workarounds.

Replace the cable first when there is visible damage, a loose connector, or uncertainty about pinout compatibility. Replace the printer when its drawer port has failed and the printer no longer meets operational needs. If the drawer and printer use incompatible release specifications, a properly matched drawer and printer combination may be more dependable than using adapters or improvised wiring.

For multi-lane restaurants, label each printer, drawer cable, and register connection during installation. Keeping a spare compatible kick cable and documenting printer-to-drawer assignments can turn a service interruption into a short counter-side fix. The objective is not simply to get the drawer open once, but to restore a dependable checkout station before the next rush.
